Fingerprints to show a smoker, an avid coffee drinker or a drug addict

Images that show how fingerprints can be used to reveal whether you are a smoker, an avid coffee drinker or even a drug addict have been revealed by UK scientists.

The technique was developed by a team of forensics experts at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, and King's College in London, both in the UK.

It exploits the fact that the breakdown products - metabolites - of substances people consume are deposited in sweat found in pores in their fingerprint ridges. To detect these metabolites they use gold nanoparticles.

The researchers, led by David Russell at UEA, claimed in 2006 that fingerprints could be used in this way. Now they have shown that it works in practise, even shortly after someone has washed their hands.

The team designed a system capable of detecting cotinine, a metabolite of nicotine. This metabolite was chosen because simple contact with a cigarette or tobacco is not enough to produce it. To detect cotinine, a fingerprint is simply dabbed with a solution containing gold nanoparticles with attached antibodies that bind to the metabolite.

Then a second antibody that binds to the cotinine antibodies and is marked with a fluorescent dye is applied. If the owner of the print is a smoker, shining light on it will reveal a florescent glow along its ridge patterns.

Besides extending the test to antibodies capable of detecting alcohol and illicit drugs, Russell thinks the technique could be used to detect performance-enhancing drug use in sport.

Genetic Pattern of Nicotine Addiction

nicotineScientists at the University of Iowa have discovered certain genetic profiles in smokers that may determine a person's risk of developing nicotine addiction and other psychological behaviors. Using a genome-wide scan, scientists analyzed blood samples from smokers versus nonsmokers and found similar genetic patterns among smokers that may one day be used as a genetic test to determine who may be more vulnerable to nicotine addiction.

In this latest study, published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics, Philibert and his colleagues analyzed the DNA samples of 94 people, some smokers and some nonsmokers. Using a technique called transcriptional profiling, they looked at all 30,000 genes of the human genome, fluorescently labeling those that were turned on versus those that were turned off in both groups. What they found was both promising and daunting: 579 genes were more activated and 584 other genes were less activated in smokers versus nonsmokers.

nicotineGunter adds that few psychological behaviors exist alone. For example, people who smoke may also have panic disorders or depression, each of which may involve a number of different genes. "How do you sort that out?" Gunter asks. "Is a genetic test disorder- specific, or specific to a cluster of disorders? There may be some sites that contribute more to prediction of a disorder than other sites. In the years to come, could we prune that down? Maybe."

There's also a question of whether, once a person starts smoking, increased nicotine consumption causes certain genes to turn on or off. To that end, Philibert plans to run similar genome-wide analyses on younger people who have not yet started smoking but may have a family history of nicotine dependence. He will also analyze DNA samples from patients with single psychological diagnoses to obtain what he calls a "cleaner phenotype."

However, Hinrichs believes it will be a while before scientists can design accurate genetic tests for such disorders. "So far, researchers have identified a number of genetic markers which may increase susceptibility to drug addiction," says Hinrichs. "Any of these would only increase the risk of addiction by a small percentage. We certainly have a long way to go before we can routinely use genetic tests."

Methadone : a potent killer

Some of you might have heard about the death of former Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith. Apparently a doctor in Studio City prescribed methadone to Smith for pain treatment before she was found dead Feb. 8 in her Hollywood, Fla., hotel suite. Months earlier, Smith's 20-year-old son died in the Bahamas after taking a lethal mixture of methadone and two antidepressants, Zoloft and Lexapro.

Methadone is a synthetic opioid, used medically as an analgesic and in the treatment of narcotic addiction. It was developed in Germany in 1937, and in the USA was first brought to market by the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company. Methadone is increasingly being prescribed by doctors as a pain medication and abused by drug users searching for a cheap, easy way to get high, physicians and federal drug officials say.

Methadone can linger in body tissue for an unusually long time — 24 to 59 hours in some cases. Sometimes users assume it has worn off, then take other drugs or more methadone, leading to respiratory depression, coma and eventual death. Here is the methadone factsheet from White House Drug Policy.

Truly an ironic turn in the history of methadone, which for years has been used to treat heroin addiction.
